(a) Looking to join a small, nimble publisher, with a growing audience across multiple platforms?
(b) Work for a reputable international brand?
(c) Someone who likes taking initiative, rather than being told what to do? or
(d) All of the above?

Then keep reading. We may have the job for you.

Advertising Executive, Time Out Australia (Sydney-based)

Five years on and going strong, Time Out Australia continues to solidify its position as the independent go-to entertainment guide. We’re looking for a self starter who isn’t afraid of mucking in to join a successful, motivated and hard-working team. Your responsibilities will involve growing revenue from the existing client base while identifying new business opportunities within the entertainment & lifestyle Industry.

What you will be doing:

• Develop and maintain strategic business relationships within the agency landscape through all available mediums ensuring understanding of prospect and products, services and competitors.
• Accurately identify and target the key decision makers within agencies and speak professionally and with enthusiasm regarding the Time Out brand and product offering.
• Develop and prepare media proposals for clients in consultation with sales management and present accurately to decision makers
• Accurately process advertising bookings and liaise with the production team to ensure that booking data has been entered correctly to implement.
• Develop and update post campaign reporting liaising with the production team
• Keep accurate records on company CRM (Salesforce) regarding client data and background to ensure appropriate management of client information
• Ensure all personal targets are regularly met

Our ideal candidate would:

• Have a minimum of one year media sales and/or account management experience
• Be capable of juggling existing client relationships and identifying new business opportunities
• Be organized
• Be able to communicate clearly and articulately
• Be an Australian resident or hold a valid visa (sorry, we can’t offer sponsorship)
• Sport a degree. In something

OK, so we can be flexible on a couple of the above points. What isn’t negotiable
is a good attitude, a sense of humour, a strong work ethic and a propensity for the
Time Out lifestyle. We like folk who practice what they preach – it’s easier to sell the
brand to advertisers if you live the lifestyle it represents.

Starting remuneration: $50K base plus super plus commissions and performance incentives (estimated overall earnings, between $65K – $75K plus super).

To apply, send your CV and a cover letter to jessica.irish@au.timeout.com with the subject line “Sydney Job Application”.

Time Out is to play host to a successful applicant for Tourism Australia’s best job in the world campaign. The search is currently under way for a lifestyle photographer, who will snap the best that Melbourne has to offer for a six month period commencing July.

The opportunity has been the result of a close collaboration between Time Out Australia, Tourism Victoria and Tourism Australia and consolidates Time Out’s position as a leading content marketing provider for the travel sector.

This follows several other successful projects during the last 6 months including:

The third edition of Time Out’s comprehensive guide to the colours and sounds of Singapore, The Little Black Book, done in conjunction with the Singapore Tourism Board.

Oz Uncovered, an e-mag commissioned by Air New Zealand to showcase hidden gems in Australian cities and give seen-it-all-before travel-keen Kiwis, more reasons to hop the ditch this winter. Meantime, our Insider’s Guide to Wellington is sending people back the other way.

A print and digital area guide to Parramatta, shining a bright shiny one on the best eats, drinks and cultural experiences the city has to offer not only Sydneysiders, but the thousands of officeworkers who travel to Parramatta each day.

Keep an eye out for the soon to be published Insider’s Guide to South Africa. One of the pillars of South African Tourism’s “Bucket List” campaign, you’re soon to find out just how much more South Africa has to offer than safaris and rugby.

For additional coverage of the Tourism Australia “Best Job in the World promotion” go here.

Time Out, the global publisher of local entertainment bibles, has today announced plans to curate a cocktail Festival in Sydney this May.

Established in 2006 to promote a better appreciation for the fine art of the cocktail, World Cocktail Week in association with Time Out, will encompass 14-days of artful imbibing (May 6-20) in venues large and small, with all events open to the public.

The Festival will climax on Monday 20th May with the famous Time Out Shakedown, the annual cocktail contest in which the best bartenders from Sydney and Melbourne enter a ring of combat to out-mix, out-muddle and out-muscle each other live on stage in a bold bid to win the audience’s vote as creator of “Australia’s greatest cocktail”.

“No publisher marries a multiplicity of lifestyles or commands as thirsty an audience as Time Out does in Sydney and Melbourne,” said Time Out joint-CEO Michael Rodrigues.

“World Cocktail Week is a great opportunity to focus our readers’ attention on the diversity of bar experiences on offer in Sydney.”

Time Out Sydney’s May issue (out May 1) will be a Cocktail special announcing a full program of events. Major hospitality groups Merivale, Keystone and Riversdale, along with a host of leading small bar operators have all indicated their support for Time Out’s World Cocktail Week festivities.

If you are a bar and would like to participate in the festival please email Myffy Rigby.

For sponsorship opportunities please contact Angus Fontaine.

Note: World Cocktail Week’s launch date of May 6 commemorates the first definition of the term “Cocktail” in print in 1806.

Last night industry, regulars and friends of legendary Melbourne bar Black Pearl, donned their childhood-dream-like best to celebrate the Fitzroy institution’s tenth birthday.

Dressing to the theme “What you wanted to be when you grew up” guests were transported back to the schoolyard, as Australia’s spiritual home of bartending turned into a one-night only grown-up’s version of a tuckshop: redskin infused negronis, vodka jellies, fairy floss and Monkey Shoulder banana milkshakes.

The sugar-rush paused momentarily as Sean Baxter and Rossco Charman auctioned off each Black Pearl bartender, raising in excess of $10,000. The night also saw the launch of the Black Pearl 2013 Calendar (think moobs, strategically placed hats, and tats). Copies are available over the bar for $20, and all proceeds (along with those from the night) go to prostate cancer research.

Bar culture in Australia has never been stronger, and as competition intensifies – most notably in Sydney where at this time of year, new bar openings are a weekly occurrence – Time Outer’s are repeatedly asked the question “What makes a good bar?” The staff? The decor? The service? The location? 7 burly blokes astride the bar butt naked?

Perhaps there’s an element of all those things (save the last) – but if the Pearl, rightly regarded by many as Australia’s spiritual home of bartending is anything to measure against, a heartfelt sentiment from owner Tash Conde bears contemplation. She didn’t speak long, but in thanking her guests, she concluded, “Hopefully we can enjoy each other’s company for another 10 years.”

We’ll drink to that.

October 2012 saw Time Out Sydney turn 5 years old. The milestone co-incided with Time Out Australia websites exceeding for the first time, 500,000 UBs in a month.

An exclusive party was held at the ivy sun room attended by young stars of our inaugural ’30 under 30’ edition – a bumper 100-page edition to mark the anniversary, including Brenna Harding (Puberty Blues) and Sarah Snook (Not Suitable for Children), who mingled with longtime friends of the magazine like glam Bodega hostess Sarah Doyle and Red Lantern man and TV favourite Luke Nguyen.

Guests were treated to bespoke Time Out Sydney cocktails from Time Out Shakedown winners Neilson Braid (Rockpool Bar & Grill) and Brendan Keown (The Hazy Rose) and a three-course meal prepared by three young apprentice chefs we met back at our Time Out Taste Tests: Jessica Chan (winner ’12), Jay Richardson (runner-up ’11) and Zen Ong (winner ’11).

Time Out Sydney co-founders Justin Etheridge and Michael Rodrigues gave a charming, insightful and fitfully hilarious account of the past five years of the magazine and website.

The night ended with a kick-arse country hoedown in the sun room as Fanny Lumsden and the Thrillseekers took to the stage to play songs from their EP, Autumn Lawn, and sing us a better-than-Marilyn rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’.
